An Eagles Super Bowl is a Must This Season

I’m breaking my own rule writing about this: we need to play the Ravens and see how the Birds do, win or lose, before we start talking about an Eagles Super Bowl. But Philly is in a drought.

Bringing science into this for just a moment, drought.gov defines a long-term drought as precipitation deficits that last more than 6 months. We can’t directly correlate that to sports, but I think the simple conversation rate is 1 month to 1 year. It’s clean and makes sense in the world of sports. While the Eagles won Super Bowl 52 6 years ago, by the time we will have our next opportunity, in 2025’s Super Bowl 59, it will be officially 7 years since that championship. By definition, Philly is in a drought.

It’s not just the Philadelphia Eagles who are in a drought, it’s the whole city. Let’s take a look at the numbers as of 2024:

  • The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018—it has been six years since a championship (seven by the time Super Bowl 59 happened).
  • The Philadelphia Union has never won the MLS Cup since they formed in 2010—14 years without a championship.
  • The Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series in 2008—16 years since a championship.
  • The Philadelphia Sixers won the NBA Finals in 1983—41 years since a championship.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers won the Stanley Cup in 1975—49 years since a championship.

As of this writing, the Eagles are the most primed to win a championship and end this drought. The Sixers are 3-14 and their star player, Joel Embiid, can’t even play a game due to ‘injury management’ AND when he does play, he’s not playing back-to-back games to try and stretch him for the season. The Flyers, and I say this as someone who gets most of his information from JJ, can’t decide what they are this year–good, bad, mediocre. The Union just fired their head coach of the last 10 years and won’t spend money, so who knows what next season will look like. And then there’s the Philadelphia Phillies. A team that should have won at least 1 ring, if not 2, over the last 3 seasons. A team who, instead of winning a ring, regressed each year in how far they made it into the postseason.

The Eagles May Be Primed, But Can They Execute

Jalen Hurts in Super Bowl 57, an Eagles Super Bowl but not a championship

An Eagles Super Bowl is badly needed in the city of Philadelphia, but the Eagles aren’t guaranteed a spot in the big game. They have had their fair share of mistakes over the last 6 years in which they should have had at least 1 or 2 more championships under their belt with the talent they’ve had. The dynasty that could have been never was. They came close in 2022 but then fell apart in 2023. In 2024, there was worry and concern before the bye and now we’re approaching overly cautious optimism. The Eagles are on a roll, winning 7 in a row, and have the best defense the team has seen since the Jim Johnson days in the 2000s. Their offensive line is part of the reason Saquon Barkley is having an MVP season and two of the best wide receivers round out this offense. While Jalen Hurts has been getting better each week and played his best game against the Rams, he’s really the only question mark on the team.

The NFC is admittedly pretty weak this year, but that helps get us to an Eagles Super Bowl. Again, a lot of my opinion on how far the Birds can get in the postseason relies on their game against the Baltimore Ravens this weekend. Win or lose, they need to look competent out there. But in all honesty, it’s looking like the NFC Super Bowl contenders are the Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Yes, keep our heads down and focus on what’s in front of us. But we need an Eagles Super Bowl. We need a chance to end the drought.
