No One Likes Us, And They Don’t Care??

This story has been picking up momentum so it’s time for me to pause my consumption of puck and write about it. Ticket prices are crashing for Super Bowl 59. In only a few days the get-in price has fallen from $5,800 to $3,880 each for a pair or $4,140 for a single ticket (Yeah, I looked around at 5 different places and included all fees so don’t @ me). So, the question becomes why? Well, I have 3 ideas…

#1 The non-fans of either team don’t have a rooting interest because they hate both teams

Listen, we are not a likable fanbase (points up at the title of this piece), we literally sing a song celebrating this fact as a ballad of pride… And it’s become increasingly hard to root for Kansas City because they’ve won before, the refs bail them out, off-the-field distractions, blah blah blah… So if you’re in NOLA this week and you aren’t comped a ticket, it makes perfect sense to me that you wouldn’t want to shell out cash to see two teams you’d rather not see win.

#2 The fanbases of both teams don’t see it as a “once in a lifetime, have to be there” event anymore because (looks around with arms outward)

The fatigue extends past non-fans to even the Philly and KC faithful. They’ve both been here before, recently to boot, so it’s not like it’s a unique opportunity anymore. Furthermore, they’ll probably both be hovering around more of these appearances in the not-too-distant future so, it makes sense that the rabid fan demand just isn’t there.

#3 The Superdome is old

Take it from me, NOLA is amazing. Truly one of the greatest cities in the country, let alone the planet. But the stadium itself is now approaching its 50th birthday, and at that age, most stadiums are either razed to the ground or abandoned (shoutout Astrodome). I wrote last week that you need to verify the view from your seat if you do opt to attend because of the odd sightlines in some higher row seats in practically every level that amount to not quite being obstructed view, but aren’t exactly open air either. This stadium is not in the pantheon of the “great” gameday experiences that you can now find in the league (Sofi, Allegiant, US Bank, hell even MetLife is quite nice aside from the hot garbage that plays there as the home team). The result, demand is lacking to get into the game.

So, with this information and the natural order of things being that prices tend to continue to fall as kickoff approaches, if you are looking to make the sojourn down to the bayou, you might get into the game for a steal (I’m considering it myself as I wrap this up)…

Go Birds.
