Yes, We Should Be Worried About The Phillies

We’ve just entered May, it’s early in the season, but yes, the Phillies are exhausting, and we should be worried.

The Philadelphia Phillies, despite being second in the NL East and finding ways to win more games than not over the last week, are exhausting, and we should all prepare to have our hearts broken by this team. I know it’s only May 3rd and there are plenty of games left, but I don’t see that as the issue. The issue is grander than April baseball. The issue is the Phillies since their London trip. The issue is the Phillies in September ’24, October ’24, and April ’25.

The Phillies Are A Playoff Team

The headline above this may confuse you, but it’s true. This team will likely make the playoffs. They will win games and may even get hot in the summer to the point where we all start getting that late-season Eagles vibe. We’ll be blasting Dancin’ on our own and preparing for the postseason, and start talking about the championship run.

The Phillies are going to break our hearts.

I don’t believe that the current iteration of this team, with all the talent and money involved, can win the World Series. Even if they get hot. Even if they get hot in late September. They will cool off in Red October. I’ll go as far as to say that my expectations for this team are to make it to the Wild Card and lose there.

Bleak, I know.

The Phillies Are Regressing

I’m bleak because… well, because I’m a Philadelphia sports fan. But there is tangible evidence that this team won’t win the World Series this year, that they’ll get hot enough to get us excited that they can win the World Series, and that they’ll break our hearts.

2022: We make it to the World Series. Philly is running on a high of the Eagles playing great and the Phillies making a deep push in the postseason. The Union is also the hottest team in the MLS at the time. All three teams somehow broke our hearts, two in the same night, and lost these championships.

2023: The Phillies are our only hope this year and are hungry to win the World Series after getting that taste. We’re Dancin’ on our own again and making another deep postseason push. The Phillies lost in the NLCS.

2024: The Phillies are the best team in baseball. Even after the London series and All-Star game break slump, we still believe. They still are the best, or at least one of the best, teams in baseball. They lost to the METS in the NLDS (thus giving birth to Get ‘Em Next Year).

There’s a natural regression here. This team has a small window to capitalize on the talent they have, and this year may be the close of that window. Could they surprise us? Yes, of course. It’s baseball. But all the talk about how it’s too early to be worried is nonsense. This team has proven in the previous three seasons that they are regressing and they started off the 2025 season less than stellar; essentially the way they ended the 2024 season, which is not something to be ignored.

I hope I’m wrong, I really do. I hope Bryce Harper reads this blog while making some kind of smoothie for TikTok, shares it with the team, and they say “Fuck Kev, we’re going to win the World Series”.

Until then, I’m worried about this team, no matter how well they are playing. But yes, I will lose my mind when they get hot and will be ill-prepared for them to break my heart despite all the signs being there.

What say you? Am I overreacting, or is there proof in the previous three seasons to be worried about this team in May?
