I remember it vividly. Like a core memory: It was 11 years ago and I had 13 beers during. That being said, forgive me if I get some of the specifics wrong. December 8th, 2013, a high school buddy of mine and I arrived in S lot at 9 am as any ambitious 20-somethings would.
Chatter on the radio and all through the parking lot about the dusting we’re about to get during the game. For all the Birds games I’ve been to, I’d never been to a game during snowfall. In the midst of snowfall, even the mundane takes on an eerie, surreal charm.
As snow began to fall, I was cautiously optimistic, as we are duped by the weatherman in southeast Pennsylvania when it comes to snow. By the time we got to our seats, we knew we were in for a treat. There was something about being swallowed up by a snowstorm that made everything feel more alive; like the whole stadium was filled with up with some chaotic magic. Shady goes for 217 and 2 TDs. The timeless image of Calvin Johnson’s face mask packed with snow.
Could We See Another Snow Bowl in Eagles vs Rams?
They say it may snow this Sunday. I can only hope. There are some parallels I can’t help but draw between this game and that. Matthew Stanford: the opposing quarterback in both games. The Eagle’s running back staking their claim to the rushing title that year. Each running back set the franchise single-game rushing record against a Stafford lead team. Vibes and playoff hopes for that team were high, with a blazing-hot Nick Foles in his first stint with the Birds. But it’s not hopes this time around, it’s expectations.
Why I’m Confident in the Eagles
Hurts looked a little rusty last week, but I am sure he was still shaking off a case of the dizzies. Coming into this game he and Stafford both boast impressive numbers against the blitz, 104 and 105 quarterback ratings respectively. Where’s the advantage you say? The Rams bring extra defenders nearly 50% more often than the Eagles, yet still give up an average of 45 more yards per game and rank 25th in yards per pass attempt against. On top of that, and for all the shit JJ and I give Hurts, he has improved against the blitz each year since 2020, from 51% to 71% in 2024.
None of that shit is gonna matter, cause Saquon knows to start the game with the long spikes, right?
What Worries Me About This Matchup
Kupp and Nacua don’t suck. They found soft spots in the secondary in the first matchup, they just didn’t capitalize. The Eagles have to get Stafford off his spot to upset his timing, and they have to do it with four rushers. And the ever-growing concern, Jake Eliot. Mother fucker missed 8 field goals and 2 extra points this season. Granted 6 of those were from 50+, this is just unacceptable and you have to imagine if there was one thing that could end the Eagle’s playoff run prematurely, it’s this.
But in all honesty, I think the Eagles get it done this weekend. I hope they get to do it in the snow. And I know it’s gonna take me 3 hours to get out of that fuckin’ parking lot.
