Told ya
So we heard from Nick Siriani this week that Saquon is likely to be among those played that are rested on Sunday. I know I said this is what I wanted, but I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. The closest any Eagle got to an NFL record in my lifetime is Nick Foles’ 7 TD game against the Raiders in 2013 to tie the single game record.
The Bigger Picture
Alas, this is the mature thing to do. Think about the team, the end goal. The Eagles have as real a shot as they did in 2022 to make the big game. Looking at the landscape of the league, they might have a better chance to win it than they did last time outside of the lack of a bye week.
In recent years, teams with a first round by make the Super Bowl at a 74% clip and in the last 30 years only 10 teams have won without the bye. I’d expect that number to chip away with time now that there is only one bye in each conference, but the fact remains, that rest before a playoff campaign pays dividends.
The Right Call
The plan to rest the players is the right move. The Eagles will be going into wildcard weekend with fresh legs and a full arsenal, including players we have been without for some time. I’d expect Goedert to be back. Huff, the pitiful signing I think he was, should be able to suit up. Think about giving some much needed rest to Jalen Carter who had already played over 200 more snaps than he did in 2023.
I expect Saquon to hit the field running angry in the wild card. You’ve got to imagine, making this personal sacrifice elevates the importance of a Super Bowl to him, if that’s even possible.
This week is a ratcheted up pre-season game where the Birds can thank the Giants for Barkley by putting their dicks in the dirt.
