The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a blow in their Week 16 loss to the Commanders, with star quarterback Jalen Hurts exiting the game due to a concussion. As the Eagles sit at 12-3 and prepare for the critical closing weeks of the regular season, the question on everyone’s mind is: When will Jalen Hurts return?
Hurts Likely Out for Week 17
Based on recent trends in concussion management and similar injuries this season, it seems unlikely Hurts will suit up for the Eagles’ Week 17 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL has emphasized a cautious approach to head injuries, and many players, including key stars, have missed at least one game following a concussion.
As mentioned in USA Today, Miami Dolphins QB, Tua Tagovailoa, missed five games after suffering a concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns receiver, Cedric Tillman, has missed four games and counting since suffering his concussion in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. We’ve talked about this on the Post Game Pod, it doesn’t look like Jalen Hurts hit the ground nearly as hard, but I do believe the protocols and the Eagles wish to prioritize Hurts’ long-term health will keep him out against the Cowboys.
Week 18 Against the Giants?
The Eagles’ approach to Week 18 will largely depend on the standings. If they need a win to secure the NFC East title (and the 2nd seed), Hurts may push for a return against the Giants. However, if the division is already clinched, the team might opt to rest him until Wild Card Weekend.
Preparing for the Postseason
Assuming Hurts doesn’t play until the playoffs, the Eagles will likely face the Commanders in the Wild Card round. With a healthy Saquon Barkley and a strong offensive line, the team can weather Hurts’ absence for now. Still, his availability is crucial for the Eagles’ hopes of making a deep postseason run.
