Again, I know, can you please go back to your corner JJ until it’s time to talk about the hockey (and then I get overly emotional and it ends up coming out like the diarrhea of a Rams Corner seeing a full-speed Saquon coming down the tracks…) But no, it is yet again time to discuss my favorite team in the City of Brotherly Love’s Favorite tenant, the Sixers.
Let’s not mince words, they are NOT GOOD. It’s relatively easy to snag a spot in the over-expanded NBA Playoffs, seriously, what’s the point? A Play-In round loss to one of the mediocre teams hovering in 7th to 10th place in the East? (Who even is that? The Magic? Hawks? IDK…)
You might not be able to win a title in October and November, but you certainly can lose one, and the Sixers are cooked. They are the proud owners of the second worst record in the entire league; their superstar, all-world, franchise center might finally be having the permanent issues to his knees that we’ve all been dreading; and the key off-season addition has not looked like it was worth the money (Hey I’ve seen this movie before!!). So what should we do? Easy, Re-light that Hinkie candle that’s been collecting dust in your closet and re-engage the process. Think I’m crazy, let’s let the numbers make my case for me
The image above is from a well-known sportsbook that I’m guessing you have on your phone if you’re reading this. These are the current odds to win the NBA Finals, and would you look at that, the Celtics are a ridiculous-for-November +240 to repeat. But let’s take this rudimentary math lesson a step further:
So, let’s take a moment to revisit these visual aids, folks. The Celtics are not only favored to win this year’s title but also next year’s, with odds surpassed by only one team (OKC) to win a single championship. What does that mean for the Sixers? It’s time to trust the process. After this dismal start, there’s no realistic scenario where rushing PG and Joel back will result in beating Boston. Instead, the focus should shift to the draft. With a deep class at the top and the Sixers only keeping their pick if it lands in the top six, the strategy is clear.
Again, in summation:
- Sixers start bad
- Celtics very, very good
- Injured veterans who are growing out of their prime
- Dynamic young players that can still develop while tanking
- Top-6 protected pick that would turn into another young piece for the growth of the team in a post-Joel world
- Celtics favored to win 2 before anyone not named OKC would win 1
- In Hinkie I still trust, Just Lose Baby!!!
- If they ever stop paying rent to the hockey team’s owners, that new building could use another blue chip or two
