Flight Check Part 3: Diary of a MadFan

I’ve re-written, edited, thrown out, and re-written this many times because of the roller coaster over the last 14 days or so. At first, I was convinced the Flyers defense was a major issue, but then it looked like I was drunk and stupid because Risto and Sanheim looked like all-stars. Then injuries made everyone have to play more, which had stretched the D thinner than an Avalon smeazy when Carter and Richards were at the Princeton (IYKYK). Now I have come to a definitive conclusion, Torts is killing this team’s chances at developing chemistry and from our (the collective OUR people) generational talent from winning the Calder Trophy as the prophecies foretold.

Befuddling Flyers

Over the last 8 games the Flyers have a .500 record, which is fine, but it’s more of how these games have gone that has me absolutely befuddled and feeling like we’re in the middle of the inevitable 10 game losing streak that will probably come after the holiday trade freeze. From playing excellent 200-foot hockey and coming up short against the Panthers; to putting it all together for a stretch of three wins in a row; to cratering back to earth with stagnant, boring performances in their last two… So it begs the question, “JJ which team that we’ve seen in the last 2 weeks is the REAL 24-25 Flyers??!”

It’s sadly all of the above… And I think it might be all Torts’ fault as I alluded to above. The Flyers have used more than 25 different line combinations through 20 games and I may be light on that number because most respectable outlets stopped counting and I am not lowering myself into the cesspool that is the dying husk of Twitter for the real answer (although Tyles will, look for him to toss out the real number after this gets published). To put it bluntly, none of the forward lines have any chemistry because they keep getting changed up which is why we’re seeing passes to nowhere and bad zone entries these last 2 games. Also, if we’re trying to have our comrade bring the Calder Trophy to Broad, maybe I dunno, PUT HIM ON A CONSISTENT LINE WITH PLAYERS THAT CAN PLAY AT HIS LEVEL! Put him with TK, and build the whole plane out of TK and MM!

So we’re essentially doomed to a rollercoaster this season that will most likely end in heartbreaking fashion as the Flyers end up picking between 6 and 16 in a draft with 4 high-floor players at the top, and Logan Stankoven parading around the city where Jerry Jones doesn’t know how to hire an interior decorator with the Calder. Thanks, I hate it… I’ll see the rest of you Saturday at the Farg for the game… Why am I like this? Let’s Go Flyers.

Share your thoughts on the Flyers run thus far below! Are the befuddling your just as much as this MadFan?

Meet JJ, our resident satirist, Flyers diehard, and a man who knows toxic relationships all too well. He’s had his fair share of them, but none have been as enduring (or as painful) as his on-again, off-again saga with the Philadelphia Flyers. From preseason hope to playoff heartbreak, JJ’s been there through it all, sticking around like a true glutton for punishment. This turbulent relationship has survived it all: wild winning streaks, brutal slumps, questionable trades, and endless playoff heartbreaks. For far too long, JJ’s been caught in a cycle of preseason optimism and end-of-season disappointment that only a true Philly fan could handle. With a closet full of orange and black, an encyclopedic knowledge of Flyers history, and a sarcastic edge sharpened by years of shattered hopes, JJ brings fans the highs, lows, and gut punches of every game. Known for calling it as he sees it (whether fans want to hear it or not), JJ might be the only guy who loves this team enough to roast it on the regular. Stick around as he covers each crushing defeat and unexpected win with the wisdom of a battle-scarred veteran and the stubborn loyalty of a true Philadelphian. Because if there's one thing JJ knows, it’s that in the end, he’ll always come crawling back to the Flyers—whether he wants to or not.
